During the end of the Second World War fourteen million Germans in Pomerania and East Prussia fled from the Red Army to the west of Germany. They left their homelands in the east to save their lives. Two million died during the trek west. Displaced and despised by their fellow Germans in the west, they lived in Allied camps for years after 1945. One family, the Marlows, were sent to a a huge estate in the Rhineland. Refugee Lotte from Pomerania and Hilda, the mistress of the Ten Eicken estate become friends and helped to rebuild from the rubble of war torn Germany a new existence.
